From forests to rivers
I'm delighted to be with Environment Victoria
For me, rivers are a web of links across the state. Until recently I was a forest campaigner working to protect the remaining old-growth forests here in Victoria. Now, that I’ve got a rivers focus to my days, the patchy mosaic of forests we were working to protect stand in contrast to rivers and waterways that are still largely in existence. The problem is, they need a drink. Desperately.
I’m delighted to join Environment Victoria’s campaign for Healthy Rivers. Continuing to work to protect nature is very important to me personally. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of summers we spent along rivers in the far east of the state. Now, my daughter enjoys those rivers as much as I did. Except that now, the water levels are not as high as they were in the 80s.
In the face of climate change, I believe we need resilient, functioning and biodiverse ecosystems to help us all withstand rising temperatures and water scarcity. A wetter landscape – with rivers that have enough water in them – is vital in this ever-drying climate.
Right now, the State Government is not prioritising water flows to rivers. This is not good enough – as many of you Rivers Champions would know more intimately than I do. Drop me a line at amelia.young@environmentvictoria.org.au. It’d be great if you could help the campaign.

Thanks Michelle!
Looking forward to the exciting year ahead and hope to meet you on the journey as rivers flow to the sea!
Welcome Amelia
Amelia - is great to have people like you leading the way. Now all we have to do is get 4,999,999 others to follow along! I admit to being a beach girl not a river girl, but rivers are the lifeblood of the land and we need to pay more attention to them.
