A big win on e-waste
Tell Jennings what you think
The federal government have announced today that they will introduce a national recycling scheme for televisions and computers.
This follows a long running campaign by Environment Victoria and other green groups calling on government to deal with the growing problem of e-waste.
The details of the recycling scheme are still to be finalised, and we’ll need to keep an eye on this.
What we do know is that it will based on an extended producer responsibility (EPR) model. That is, producers on televisions and computers will be responsible for the collection and recycling of old items.
The scheme should be fully operational by 2011 with hundreds of drop-off centres all around the country. So until then, keep that old TV or computer stashed in the garage or spare room.
What’s next?
Once the scheme is in place there’ll be no excuse for not recycling TVs and computers. So we think that state governments should ban this material from going to landfill.
South Australia is leading the way on this issue and has already got regulations in train. If you want the Victorian Government to do their bit, we need you to inundate our political leaders with messages, letting them know that the community is serious about dealing with landfill.
Let’s start with the State Minister for Environment, Gavin Jennings MLC
And tell us what you expect the government to do about landfill.
Go to it!

Yep, it was a good win.
Thanks for the support. It was a hard slog, especially for those who were at it for a lot longer than me. But it shows that persistence pays.
BTW, I had a very orderly evening. Xmas is just around the corner, so I'm saving my celebratory energy.
Recycling our way out of trouble
This is an awesome outcome. Waste is a climate problem so recycling is pasrt of the solution. Turning e-waste back into a resource is just the beginning - now lets get recycling schemes happening for tyres, batteries, phones, cars... even the kitchen sink! Woo hoo!
One win at a time
Is great to see progress and hear something positive that is happening. So often all we hear is the bad stuff - keep it up and keep the good news coming.
EPR - computers and TVs
