Victoria's leading non-government environment group - mobilising
5 million people to take
Green Action

What is Green Action?

Green Action is a bold new movement to mobilise every single person in Victoria (all 5 million of us) to become actively involved in safeguarding our environment.

It’s about each one of us taking actions to help the environment in our own special way. Actions that are meaningful to us as individuals—and remarkably powerful when they are multiplied by 5 million.

Packaging

The next time you unwrap a chocolate bar, consider this. One year from now, you’ll have thrown away around 200 kg of packaging waste. And so will everyone you know.

Put us Aussies all together and that’s enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground nine times over. That’s 1.9 million tonnes of packaging in the bin.

Despite how much energy and resources it takes to make, most of this packaging will be used only once. Which, given the amount of greenhouse gas it produces (860,000 cars-worth), is pretty silly.

DUMP awards honour packaging horrors

Tuesday, 6 February 2007

Fruit and vegetables needlessly packaged, drink bottles that are too confusing or downright impossible to recycle; products likely to be littered and items packed with masses of materials have been given the dubious honour of winning DUMP Awards, for damaging and useless packaging.

Judged by an independent expert panel from academia, local government and the community sector, the DUMP Awards – now in their third year – highlight negative trends in packaging and labelling.
