A bit more about Safe Climate
Climate change is the single greatest environmental threat to our way of life. And the window of opportunity in which we do something about it is right now.
We need to start reducing our greenhouse emissions today. And we need our political, industry, business and community leaders to commit to doing whatever they can.
With everyone onboard, we can halve Victoria's greenhouse emissions by 2020 and achieve the safe climate future we all want.
Environment Victoria was one of the first environment groups in Australia to set up a campaign on climate change. Since 2000, we've worked hard to get the Victorian and federal governments to act. We've mobilised 100,000 people over the years to Walk Against Warming. We took the state government to the Victorian Civil and Administration Tribunal over its rubber stamping of the Hazelwood Power Station expansion. We've commissed a report that shows how we can slash our greenhouse emissions and transform our economy with technologies available today.
Our goal: to achieve a Safe Climate for everyone.
Our focus is on solutions and community action. Although the climate crisis presents us with many challenges, it also provides fantastic opportunities. Opportunities that could see Australia and Victoria become world leaders in renewable technology and rejuvenate our communities.
We have the know-how. We have the technology and the resources. What we need is the political will-power. Our leaders are still just talking the talk. We need to make them walk the walk.
To date, they yet to rise to the challenge but we can compell them to act. We believe our leaders must find the courage to act decisively and that this courage can only come from widespread community demand.
We work to mobilise communities to act and pressure our leaders on climate change. Individuals and families from all walks of life have joined us. We are not there yet, but more and more people are joining our call for smart and decisive action.
At the moment, the voices of the coal, oil, automobile, aluminium and other polluting industries are the dominant voices in our politicians' ears. We must be louder. We think together we can be.
It's up to us
A future of runaway climate change is a frightening prospect. The good news is, it's entirely preventable. Effective and decisive action now, will prevent the more serious climate impacts and secure a safe climate future for the next generation.
