Peak Oil and Victoria

2008

On any given weekday morning, Melbourne’s key roads are clogged as 78 per cent of the city’s workforce drives to work. Most drive alone. Rushed parents and their children join the congested traffic on their daily morning school run. Diesel trucks load up and set out along the urban freeway network, and commercial vehicles begin their ‘just in time’ deliveries across the suburbs to supermarkets surrounded by acres of car parking. In rural Victoria, people are filling their cars with petrol before beginning the drive to Melbourne for medical appointments, meetings, or shopping. They shake their heads as they realise that petrol prices have gone up again. Could it really be even more expensive than last time?
