Get out your calendar – new dates for free workshops in Gippsland

Environment Victoria is rolling out heaps of sustainability activities in the Latrobe Valley over 2009 and 2010, and we’ve just scheduled in more free workshops, which are all about saving money and keeping cool this summer, as well as helping the environment.

After running the Sustainability on a Shoestring workshops in Morwell in November, more are planned for the Traralgon Neighbourhood House in February and March. And we changed the name! (They used to be called Families Go Green.) Anyone can take part in these introductory level workshops which cover all the things you can do to save energy and water in the home which don’t break the budget, and make living more affordable. The Traralgon workshops are happening on Tuesday 28 February and Tuesday 9 March, with possibly a third workshop later in March. Churchill Neighbourhood House will also get its own Families Go Green workshop series, on Thursday 11 March and Thursday 25 March, and there will be activities in Moe after Easter.

But first we’ll be training the Latrobe City Council’s Home and Community Care workers in how to do sustainability audits of their clients’ homes. The training helps them work with the people they care for to make their houses more sustainable, cheaper to live in and more comfortable. Options like better heating, cooling, insulation and draught blocking can make a big difference to the electricity bill. The HACC training starts on 20 January, in partnership with the Latrobe City Council.

We’ll also be running a series of workshops with the Traralgon Uniting Church, and plans are underway to run a program with young people in the valley. Stay tuned.
